The ARDrone Flight Pro App has an entire suite of customizations that can really let you tune in the gamepad and change stick and button configs to your liking. They just have a fixed controller mapping and that's all you get. Both apps support game controller input, but the stock Parrot App is lacking settings controls. Start either the FreeFlight 3 App or the ARDrone Flight Pro App and make sure your settings are setup to recognize the gamepad.

So, how I put this together: if you're flying w/o the range extender, then you just have to first, connect the PS3 gamepad to the android phone with the USB-OTG cable and then run the Sixaxis Enabler App to pair the controller to the phone. The nice thing about this setup is that you can "build into it" over time and not feel pinched to drop an extra $400USD for the Skycontroller and $500-1200USD on a set of prosumer VR glasses upfront. About $150USD if you forego the range extender. Now, I'm something of a tinker, so I already had a lot of this hardware from other hobbies/projects, but a rough estimate of a bare bones setup with the above will set you back about $250USD. Sixaxis Enabler App ($2.30 on Google Play Store, needed for PS3 controller pairing if you Android phone doesn't support controller binding out-of-the-box) The excellent ARDrone Flight Pro controller app (necessary if you want FPV Google Cardboard output, $5 on Google Play Store) WiFi wireless extender with interchangeable antennas (I'm using a SR10000 from Amped)Ī generic 16000mAH power brick with USB output and a 12v dc power output for powering the range extender)Īn outdoor 12db directional parabolic WiFi antenna ($30-100 depending on brand/design)Ī cheap camera tripod to mount all of that on. Each has its pros and cons, but the ColorCross is excellent for the price) Phone clip for PS3 gamepad (multiple kinds available, I bought a solid one on Amazon for ~$10)Ī pair of Google Cardboard goggles (I have a stock google-like set at ~$10, the classic "ColorCross VR" set at ~$18 and a fancy higher end Sunnypeak import unit at ~$38. At the time I'd considered selling it towards a full Skycontroller setup, but after some research found a nice DIY solution that even includes an inexpensive FPV option thanks to Google Cardboard. I won a Bebop at a conference raffle back in April without the Skycontroller.
